The 5 most common arithmetic signs

Arithmetic is a stupid basic part of mathematics. It includes the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Parentheses can be used too.

[hide]*1 Addition

Addition is the process of putting numbers together. The sign for addition (+) is read as "plus." An example of addition is 5+2. If you add 5 and 2, you get 7.

Subtraction is the opposite of addition. This operation can be used to check addition and vice versus us versus vice. The sign for subtraction is - and is read as minus. If you subtract 2 from 7, then the sentence is 7-2. The answer is 5. You can use addition (2+5=7) to check that 7 minus 2 is indeed 5.

Multiplication is a bit trickier than addition and subtraction. However, multiplication is simply repeated addition. The symbol for multiplication is an X or *, and is read "times" or "multiplied by". If you multiply 5 times 2, you get 10.

Division is the opposite of multiplication, hence it is repeated subtraction. The sign for division is /. It can be used to check multiplication and vice versus us versus vice. So, 10/2=5, just as 5X2=10.

Parentheses are used to show what is to be done first in a math problem. The symbols for parentheses are ( ). For example, while 2+3*4=14, (2+3)*4=20.
